University Libraries Presents The STEM Speaker Series Featuring Dr. Ya Wang

“Optically Chopped PIR Sensor for Occupancy Detection” Passive infrared (PIR) sensors are the current choice for occupancy presence detection in buildings. The sensors are popularly used for controlling lighting, heating and cooling based on occupancy. A major problem is that these PIR sensors only detect individuals who are moving, which may provide false negative detections and inaccurate occupancy estimation, resulting in uncomfortable lighting/temperature swings, short lifetime of the equipment, and waste of energy. To address this issue, this talk presents a new type optically chopped PIR sensor, equipped with an electronic shutter and machine learning technologies that enable fast and accurate occupancy detection including individuals who are stationary.

Ways of Kneeling: Artist Talk by Young Min Moon (Zuccaire Gallery/Staller Center, Wednesday March 28 @ 1-2 pm)

Wednesday, March 28, 1 pm
Zuccaire Art Gallery, Staller Center for the Arts
The talk, entitled “Ways of Kneeling,” focuses on the artist’s repeated imagery of a back view of a kneeling man in a suit. Moon states, “These images are based on a significant experience from my upbringing in South Korea: Jesa, a Confucian ritual performed as a remembrance of spirits of ancestors and funerary rite of mourning for the deceased. Growing up in the South Korean military regime of the 1980s in which violence was a norm everywhere, including classrooms, the austere moments of silence during prostration have become one of the most important memories of mine.” Recipient of 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship, Moon is Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. http://youngminmoon.net
Introduced and Q&A moderated by Prof. Sohl Lee, Department of Art, and sponsored by The Center for Korean Research at Columbia University and the Center for Korean Studies at Stony Brook University.
