R.E.D.I. Seminar

REDI is as an opportunity for faculty/staff to engage in experiential activities and group discussions with an emphasis on self- discovery and awareness as related to diversity, equity and inclusion. The nature of the seminar provides a safe space for the timely and sometimes sensitive, yet necessary discussions related to the wonderful myriad of diversity that make up our campus community. Attendance is capped at 20 people in order to create an intimate environment which is more conducive to critical and constructive discussion. It is suggested that members of the same department or program attempt to attend the seminars on different dates. Registration is required and can be accessed by going to the SBU diversity web site and clicking on the R.E.D.I. tab. In order to ensure that remaining seminars will not be cancelled due to low registration, please choose a date that has less than 10 seats available. The following dates are: April 6; 18; 20; 27; 30 May 3; 8; 10; 14; 31; and June 1

Make Your Google Sheets Data More Visual with Conditional Formatting

When you have a spreadsheet with a lot of data, it can be overwhelming to sift through for what you want to see. The Google Sheets conditional formatting feature can help: use it to highlight empty cells, cross off rows that have 0s, highlight highest values in green and lowest values in red, and more. You’ll learn how to set up conditional formatting to highlight what you want to see in your data so you’ll no longer need to waste time scrolling through black and white sheets looking for specific data. This workshop is online on Tuesday, 5/1, 11am-11:30am.

University Libraries Present : Computational Interaction in Post-PC Computing, by Dr. Xiaojun Bi.

n the current Post-PC computing era, new computing technologies such as mobile computing, wearable computing, augmented and virtual reality have emerged, which bring wicked challenges to interaction between humans and information technology. To address these challenges, designers must consider a multiplicity of problems from low-level hardware, through software, all the way to human factors. In this talk Dr. Bi will introduce a new perspective, which was introduced in our recently published book Computational Interaction, on how to design software user interfaces and interaction technology.

Registration Required.

5/4/18: Astronomy Open Night: Stellar Nucleosysthesis and the Origin of the Elements

Astronomy Open Night, Friday, May 4, 2018
ESS 001; 7:30PM
Michael Zingale: “Stellar Nucleosysthesis and the Origin of the Elements”
Aside from hydrogen and helium and a few other light elements and isotopes, the elements in our bodies and on earth trace their origins to stars. During their lifetimes, stars produce energy by fusing light elements into heavier elements. At the final stage of stellar evolution, supernova explosions and stellar mergers make the very heaviest elements. In this talk, I will present an overview of the process of stellar nucleosynthesis and outline some of the sites where it takes place.
Prof. Zingale is an Associate Professor of Astronomy in Stony Brook’s department of Physics and Astronomy. He joined the Department in 2006, coming most recently from a postdoctoral position at the University of California at Santa Cruz. His research is in modeling stellar explosions and the basic physics therein, and he is an expert in numerical hydrodynamics.
