IACS/Provost Lecture: This overview of the free energy principle offers an account of embodied exchange with the world that associates neuronal operations with actively inferring the causes of our sensations. We will consider the implications for functional anatomy, in terms of predictive coding and hierarchical architectures, and conclude by looking at the epistemic, self-evidencing behavior that emerges – using simulations of active inference.

Life requires the creation of force. From muscle contraction to the unwinding of DNA helices, many cellular processes are powered by protein motors, which transform chemical energy in the form of ATP into motion for productive work. Dr Glynn will discuss how a family of specialized ATP-fueled motors provide the force needed to drive key events in the life of the cell, and how recent advances in bioimaging are revealing the intricate mechanisms of these biological nanomachines.

Research on Periodontal Disease

The Department of Periodontology is seeking volunteers for a clinical research study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a technique for reducing periodontal pockets. The study requires you come to the dental clinic for between 11 to 16 visits over 5 months. Research on Dental Implants

The Department of Periodontology is seeking volunteers for a clinical research study to evaluate an Over-The-Counter (OTC) periodontal rinse for relieving discomfort rather than medically treating Peri-Implant Mucositis. The study requires 5 visits over 3 months at the dental clinic. You must have a dental implant for more than 1 year, have at least 20 natural teeth, good general health and be a non-smoker. Research on Stress during Pregnancy

The Mind-Body Center is seeking volunteers for focus groups to help us better understand how stress affects pregnant women and how we can help women cope better during and after pregnancy.
