Tree Adjoining Grammar: Using Multiple Representations of Syntax

Owen Rambow, Elemental Cognition LLP

Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG), developed by Aravind Joshi in the 1980s, is a generative tree-rewriting formalism which is used to represent the syntax of natural languages. Unlike its close relative, the better-known context-free grammar, it allows for entire trees to be elementary structures of the grammar. As a result, it allows us to derive complex syntactic structures from entire lexical projections of words.
