Stony Brook University will launch an undergraduate journalism program this fall — the first of its kind at a New York state public university.

With more than 100 students already registered for journalism courses for the fall semester, Stony Brook says it is now trying to build its faculty and resources and anticipates hosting several hundred journalism majors over the next five years.

Stony Brook, which is part of the State University of New York system, named former Newsday editor Howard Schneider as the new journalism school’s dean.

Journalism classes will primarily be held on campus in the school’s planned “newsroom of the future,” which will be linked to smaller newsrooms that the school plans to build at its Manhattan and Southampton, L.I., campuses.
