This was an enormously exciting weekend of baseball. Despite winning 22 of our last 23 games and having the best record in the country, we entered the NCAA Playoffs as a bottom seed, down in Coral Gables to play Miami, Missouri State, and UCF, all of whom were Top 40 teams who had faced “harder” competition all season.
Well, they didn’t count on Stony Brook averaging ten runs a game and going 4-1 to clinch our first ever spot in the “Sweet 16” of college baseball!
Then, as a cherry, center fielder Travis Jankowski was drafted by the Padres with the 44th overall pick in the MLB Draft late last night. Congrats to Travis, who’s a great talent and has a bright baseball future ahead of him. I noticed that Padres exec Omar Minaya was on campus for the America East tourney — I guess he liked what he saw! Thanks, Omar!
