Visual ImageAt this point you may be thinking, “But isn’t the important part of my speech or presentation the verbal part?” To which I would reply, “Yes, but your visuals can better engage your audience as well as help with their retention!” One of the reasons why it is important for you to learn how to create effective visuals is because you will most likely have to use them in your life after high school.  It is important that your visual is effective and allows your audience to better understand and engage with the information you are trying to give them.

Your goal at the end of this topic is to create a set of visuals that align with the speech that you have been working on. You should apply the knowledge you’ve learned about creating effective visuals and about presentation software to select a presentation software that is appropriate for your topic and use the software to create engaging visuals that enhance, not replace, your verbal content.  Being able to create visuals that enhance your speech and allow the audience to better understand your content is an essential skill that you will use in our Public Speaking class and potentially in life beyond high school.

Before completing the visuals, I would like you to complete the following Ponder writing activity.

Please list four hypothetical examples of where you might have to use visual aids outside of school and the classroom.  Think about what your goals are in the future.  How might you have to use them in your future career field? Even if you do not think you will be giving speeches in the future, think about the ways creating effective visual aids still may be a useful skill for you.

Talk to your friends, family, and/or teachers about the ways they use visual aids in their careers or lives.  Choose one example and share with the class. You can list your examples on the following Google Document.  This will allow us to collaborate as a class and comment on each other’s experiences on one class GoogleDoc.
