Result Reinforces SBU as One of Leading Incubators of High School Talent in Nation

STONY BROOK, N.Y., January 17, 2008— Twenty-eight high school students who worked with Stony Brook University faculty were named Semifinalists in the 67th Intel Science Talent Search, the prestigious nationwide research competition. The 28 students represent nine per cent of the 300 Intel Semifinalists selected nationwide, making Stony Brook perhaps the largest incubator of Intel talent in the country. On Long Island, this number translates into nearly 40 per cent of the region’s 69 Intel Semifinalists.

The students were mentored by faculty from departments throughout the Stony Brook University campus, including Applied Math & Statistics, Biochemistry & Cell Biology, Chemistry, Marine & Atmospheric Sciences, Materials Science & Engineering, Mathematics, Nephrology, Neurobiology & Behavior, Pediatrics, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology. A number of these students participated in summer research programs, including the Garcia Center: Polymers at Engineered Interfaces – Research Scholar Program, and the Simons Summer Research Program.

“Our extraordinary faculty researchers are generous with their time and their resources,” said Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny. “They are truly helping to develop these gifted young students into the scientists of tomorrow.”

The compelling numbers reinforced Stony Brook’s reputation in developing the research talents of exceptional high school students. Stony Brook faculty members have mentored 194 Intel semifinalists since 2002.

Eleven of the 13 Intel semifinalists from Ward Melville High School, which had the highest number of semifinalists in the country, were mentored at Stony Brook, including: Steven Anderson (mentored by Professor Marco Martens in Mathematics); Eric Cooper (mentored by Professor Fernando Raineri in Chemistry); Mary Freiss (mentored by Professor Wei Zhu in Applied Math and Statistics); Michael Gartner (mentored by Professor Roy Lacey in Chemistry); Herman Gudjonson (mentored by Professor Maurice Kernan in Neurobiology and Behavior); Jin Guo (mentored by Dr. Hongye Li and Professor Edward P. Nord in Department of Medicine-Division of Nephrology); Yang Li (mentored by Professor Edmund Chang in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences); Krista Mar (mentored by Professor Andreas Mayr in Chemistry); Hillary Moss (mentored by Professor Robert Haltiwanger in Biochemistry & Cell Biology); Anne Polyakov (mentored by Professor Vasili Semenov of Physics & Astronomy) Kalan Ray-Mazumder (mentored by Professor Arthur Samuel of Psychology).

The names of all the Intel semifinalist students who conducted their research at Stony Brook University and their Stony Brook research mentors are posted at: http://www.stonybrook.edu/simons/intel. The 40 Intel finalists will be announced on January 30.
