Bahamian-Shark-SanctuaryDemian Chapman, an associate professor in Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and SBU graduate student Mark Bond are leading a scientific research expedition in the Bahamian Shark Sanctuary. The team is conducting groundbreaking research on the movements and behavior patterns of some of the most endangered and threatened shark species in an attempt to better understand and protect them.

Christine O’Connell, a science communication professional at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science in Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism, is also part of the team and is blogging about their experiences each day from the Bahamas. O’Connell is a SoMAS alum and a marine and environmental scientist with an extensive interdisciplinary background in policy, outreach and communication.

Additionally, the team is conducting ongoing education and stewardship efforts in the Bahamas to help curb illegal fishing and to promote support for shark conservation among the local fishermen and communities.

The Moore Charitable Foundation began funding this research expedition to the Bahamas in 2013; this is the third year of the project.
