Brian Yurasits

I’m a Long Island native, and completed my B.A in Environmental Studies at New York University in 2015. In New York City, my research involved examining ecological data collected at marine reserves around the world, under a socio-economic scope. This work was aimed at discovering which characteristics of a marine reserve are particularly important to its success in developing areas, as compared with marine reserves in developed areas. More generally, my interests lie in the field of evidence-based conservation, where ecological data from marine environments can be used to quantify human impacts, and drive sustainable management of marine resources and habitat. At Stony Brook University, I currently work with Dr. Demian Chapman and Dr. Jasmine Valentin to study the effectiveness of citizen science methodology as a way to conduct reliable scientific research projects in marine protected areas. I hope to continue my research on marine reserves after I complete the MCP program here, and seek to work as a fisheries biologist, or research technician in this field.
