#5: Honoring LI Veterans

As a Veterans Day tradition, the United University Professions (UUP) Community Services Committee has been sponsoring programs recognizing service men and women since  2010.

One of the most endearing programs is Hats for Heroes, providing military service caps to the residents of the Long Island State Veterans Home (LISVH) and participants in the Adult Day Care Program.

Each veteran at the Long Island State Veterans Home was presented with a cap that reflected their military service.

More than 100 individual donors from the campus and the community  contributed a total of $2,200 for the Hats for Heroes program. The money collected surpassed the goal needed for funding the hats, allowing for an added benefit of a donation to the LISVH therapeutic recreation department.

At a Veterans Day ceremony held on November 6, UUP volunteers thanked the veterans for their service and distributed the hats. “We all can be very proud to have this opportunity to be able to express our appreciation to our heroes,” said Nancy Gaugler, UUP Community Services Committee Chair.

The Long Island State Veterans Home staff were thanked by UUP President Arthur Shertzer for providing the veterans with the care and respect they deserve.
