#16 Creativity Awaits at iCREATE

For the third year in a row, SBU iCREATE  was featured as one of the makers at the Eastern Long Island Mini Maker Faire, which took place this year on June 10 at the Port Jefferson Maritime Explorium.

The Maker Faire is a family-friendly showcase of the interesting things people — from engineers to artists — do in the spirit of innovation, creativity, resourcefulness and invention.

Participants experience the 3D Doodler pens

iCREATE showcased several different interactive activities including 3D Doodler pens, a PacMan robot maze, DIY arm braces, and 3D puzzles made of cardboard and balsa wood.

The PacMan maze, Google cardboards (VR) and 3D Doodler pens all use technology to capture the visitor’s attention. Not all of these new technologies are readily available to the average person or visitor.

“As I see it, the hands-on activities that were developed and taught allowed the community to find a place to enhance their knowledge and skill set around new technology, which is why we exist” said iCREATE Director David Ecker. “We allow new ideas to be developed and implemented through thinking, creating and innovating.”

#15 Supporting Stony Brook HOME

Alumnus Arnold M. Schwartz, MD ’80, and his philanthropic efforts has funded most of the annual budget for Stony Brook Health Outreach and Medical Education (HOME), a free student-run primary care clinic.

The clinic serves a twofold purpose: Improve the health and well-being of uninsured and in-need community members while providing real-world training to Stony Brook medical students.

Students who run the clinic — under the preceptorship of local, licensed physicians — not only gain hands-on experience, they’re challenged to think on their feet to find creative health care solutions.

“Dr. Schwartz’s funding not only supports the clinic, clinical staff and lab studies that help our community members receive the health care they need, he’s providing medical students a valuable opportunity that illustrates the importance of philanthropy,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President of Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine.

Today, the clinic serves more than 400 patients annually, many of whom make less than $10,000 per year and have never before visited a doctor.

#14 Seawolves March Against Domestic Violence

Students, staff and faculty came together on October 25 for Stony Brook’s annual “Take A Stand, Walk With Me” march around campus to raise awareness of domestic violence.

With the Spirit of Stony Brook Drum Corps and Wolfie leading the march, the campus community marched from the SAC throughout the entire academic mall. Students waved their signs, chanted, and danced to the beat of the marching band’s drums as they walked through campus.

The campus community marched together to raise awareness.

The march concluded with attendees being ushered into the SAC Auditorium for a rally and information fair about domestic violence, featuring representatives from on-campus and community resources such as  the Green Dot bystander intervention training program.

Swallow This!”, a prevention through the arts peer education program that portrays real student scenarios around alcohol or other issues, also gave a performance highlighting students’ experiences with domestic violence.

The rally also featured a display of the Monument Quilt, quilt squares created by survivors of sexual violence and their allies, along with a banner that event participants could sign to express messages of support for those impacted by all forms of interpersonal violence.

The annual event is organized by the Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO) as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Visit their website to find out more about on-campus resources to combat domestic violence and other issues affecting students.
