#7 Pharmaceutical Take Back Day

More than 40 pounds of unused or expired prescription medications were collected at the Student Activities Center Kiosk on Wednesday, October 25, for Pharmaceutical Take Back Day.

This event provided the campus community a safe, convenient and environmentally responsible way to dispose of expired pharmaceuticals and/or excess medications, including over-the-counter medications.

The groups that joined efforts to make Take Back Day a success.

The campus-wide collection effort was hosted by the Student Health Advisory Committee and Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services from the Division of Student Affairs, in collaboration with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Stony Brook’s Undergraduate Student Government.

The next Pharmaceutical Take Back Day will be next year, but don’t wait to properly dispose of your medication. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has set up permanent medication drop boxes in the main lobbies of the Riverhead Correctional Facility’s Administration Building as well as in the Civil Bureau in Yaphank.

#6 Campus and Community Celebrate CommUniversity Day

Stony Brook University launched a new campus tradition, CommUniversity Day, on Saturday, September 23, 2017.

On a beautiful fall day, more than 200 University faculty, staff and students volunteered their time to share highlights of the campus with the community. Families, friends and neighbors enjoyed exploring roughly 80 interactive exhibits during the four-hour event.

Family fun was had by all at Stony Brook’s first CommUniversity Day.

Rising out of the Campus Plan for Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, the goal for CommUniversity Day was to create community and campus interactions by showcasing some of the many facets of the University.

“We’re proud to offer this new opportunity for visitors to discover more about Stony Brook University and hope that our neighbors and campus community enjoyed the wide array of activities and performances,“ said President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD.

Some of the interactive stations included a drowsy-driving simulator,  flying drones, 3D Pens, and dental screenings. Families played tunes on free kazoos and were introduced to new ways of making music at the Instrument Petting Zoo.

The day included brief talks on hot topics, wellness activities such as yoga and tai chi, a Farmers Market, and food trucks. The event closed with Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band celebrating the hundreds of red rubber ducks racing down the brook.

#5 Pre-Vet Society Holds Shelter Fundraiser

Stony Brook University’s Pre-Veterinary Society is an organization for pre-vet students and any student who is enthusiastic about animals.

The Society set out to raise money to build winter homes for feral cats. President Hassan Amin, Vice-President Valerie Timmerman, Secretary Suzanne Kostrewski, and Member Nathan Butzke volunteered their time on November 1, 2017 selling baked goods in the lobby of the Frank Jr. Melville Library.

A bake sale fundraiser to benefit feral cats was held in the library.

The baked goods were made by the Pre-Vet Society members and included cupcakes, cookies, and other treats. More than $80 was raised at the bake sale.

Although this was enough funds for supplies for the cat homes, they decided to donate the funds to the Save-A-Pet shelter in Port Jefferson, an organization dedicated to saving the lives of animals. The Society plans on having an official club visit to the shelter next semester.

While the Pre-Vet Society is forgoing the building of the cat homes for the year, they plan on having an educational session sometime during this academic year. The session would be on “how to build a winter cat house” or “how to create cat toys” so members and guests can help shelters at home.
