More than 350 people attend Stony Brook University Heart Institutes “Keeping Your Heart Healthy at Every Age” events to learn more about heart health during life stages.
To increase the potential audience hearing this important information, the events were held on two days with one in English and one in Spanish.
Heart Institute nurse, Kellie Gumersell, RN (left) provided cholesterol screenings at the event.
The guests at the events enjoyed a heart healthy dinner buffet featuring recipes from the Heart Institute cookbook and an opportunity to learn more about heart health.
Many of the guests were seated with physician and nurse experts. Conversations at the table focused on heart-related topics such as recognizing signs and symptoms of heart disease.
Every one who attended received a heart healthy cookbook.
Following dinner, guests were offered health screenings and a walk through an exhibit of information tables, such as the “Mended Hearts” support group, To add to the atmosphere, the song “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” played in the background.
A panel discussion featuring Heart Institute physicians addressed audience concerns. Questions ranged from keeping a healthy heart lifestyle and how heart attack signs are different for women to dealing with atrial fibrillation, vascular disease and heart failure.
The next Stony Brook Heart Healthy event will be in May, 2016. Registration opens in February.
