This is the page for the level design assignment. The game that I am going to design is a word based game.
The idea is to have a grid of letters and have the user connect those letters to create words. The longer the word the higher the score. There is a time limit which increases the challenge, and the player can also keep track of their score, to try and create personal bests.
This is what the basic layout will look like:
Once the user selects a mode, such as English words, Animals, etc. They enter the game screen:
Level design:
- Level 1: Target is 100 points to access the other levels, where difficulty ramps up.
- Level 2: Target is 200 points. In order to reach these higher levels the player must find longer words
- Level 3: User has the option to have the time decrease by 15 seconds or have the target increase
This pattern can go on for 10 levels.
There is a victory screen and more modes such as Animals, This is a preliminary design, one that I will iterate upon in the coming weeks.
I feel that this is the quintessential “easy to pick up difficult to master” game. As the premise is so simple anyone can give it a shot. If you want to increase levels and try and play friends however you need to quickly learn how to recognize words quickly and create high chains to get the most points possible. This game, I feel, fits right into the Goldilocks zone addicting but not overwhelming. Which is why I think this is a good game to try and design.
