Type Sampler

Rationale

I wanted the overall feeling of my typography to be welcoming. I chose fonts with more rounded edges in hopes of achieving this. For my logotype specifically, I chose to use a handwritten font with this same goal of friendliness in mind. In terms of layout, I made the “women” part of the name bigger since I feel like that is the most important aspect of WiCS. “Computer Science”, which is the focus of the club can arguably be considered that as well. In order to account for this, I made that text a different color so that it would stand out. I wanted parts of the name to look visually different anyway so that it didn’t appear like a block of text due to the long name.

I also made the o in “women” a bunny head. I wanted it to look hand drawn since that would make the overall design look more approachable. I also included some of the signature features that would allow members to recognize it as their mascot, Hopper. For instance, I added the ear lines and the stars/sparks. However, since the bunny does stick out more on one side, I incorporated the female sign on the right hand side to balance it out visually. (It is an extra detail, and I didn’t want the logotype to look too crowded, so I made this part a different color as well.). Furthermore, I wanted to make sure that my logotype matched my logo more so I also added in the nodes and the network lines again. It’s incorporated into the symbol for women.

In terms of the Type Sampler fonts, I chose Sirenia, Chalkboard SE, and Ofelia Text. All of them are sans-serif fonts since I was going for a more modern and high tech feel, fitting for a CS club. The first font that I chose was the header text. I wanted it to be eye catching and bold. This was why I made the header all caps as well. Furthermore, since WiCS hosts a lot of serious events, I also wanted to tie in a more professional looking font since my logo and logotype prioritized approachable-ness. The font I found was Sirenia. For the subheading, I stuck with all caps as well. I wanted a nice contrast to the more structured Sirenia, so I chose the thinner, smaller, and handwritten Chalkboard. The captions and body text were both Ofelia Text. Since the heading and subheading were more stylized, I kept this part nice and simple. It is going to be the bulk of the site and holding the most information that people would read. It needed to be neat and legible.
