For this assignment, I tried to put a lot of thought into my choice of font for the logo, and what kind of feeling that font choice would convey. As I went through the different aspects of fonts listed on this page I ended up coming up with a list of criteria for the font I wanted. I wanted a bold font (powerful), that was san-serif (innovative), angular (durable), straight (stable), condensed (precise). I then decided I wanted to have a mixed case for my typography, as it was more easily readable, but I wanted to have a reverse casing to make it more unique, with the lowercase ‘i’.
I went through every font I had and came to the choice of using OpineHeavy, as it had all of the qualities I needed, and was somewhat reminiscent of the fonts Stony Brook uses, but not exactly the same. I ended up changing some things, like the ends of the ‘E’ and the ‘T’ but was overall satisfied. I then chose to add the subtext on the bottom in Museo Slab, as this is the standard Stony Brook font for sub-headers, and I felt that the semi-serif qualities contrasted nicely with the sans-serif I was using for the main font.
After that, I decided to incorporate the shield logo for Stony Brook in the form of the cuts in the ‘i’ as I thought it really fit and added to the logo overall.
