Logos

Bend Studio

I created two logos for my client, Bend Studio, a game developer based in Bend, Oregon. They are best known for their Syphon Filter series, and more recently, the PlayStation 4 exclusive Days Gone.

The first logo features a white mark on top of a black background, and the second logos colors are reversed, allowing the logo to be used in potentially almost any color background. I chose a simple mark of a bending river and conifer tree because it is represents the name of the company (it’s easy for viewers to see the bending river and think “Bend”) as well as the company’s location in Oregon, a state known for its natural beauty and landscapes.

The logos make good use of positive and negative spaces. The fonts used were American Typewriter for the top type, and Courier New for the bottom type. The fonts are kind of an example of skeumorphic design themselves, since they are fairly old fonts used in typewriters and basically anything using old types. But they are used for their simplicity, sleekness, and they convey a type of seriousness— seriousness in the belief of the work they do. These fonts are still being used today, and their timelessness speaks to their versatility and reliability.

Care.org

I had also created a color and black and white version of a logo for care.org, a charity involved in multiple causes. I was interested in their work in contributing to increasing access to education for children around the world, especially those in developing parts of the world. This part of care.org’s mission involves empowering the youth and in turn helping them out of poverty, so it would make sense to go with a logo that showed how the people around the children, particularly adults, can help accommodate children’s access to education.

In that interest, I went with a circular logo that contained an adult and a child together, with the child wearing a graduation cap. The yellow circular logo is reminiscent of the sun, a symbol of growth and new hope. The presence of the adult next to the child represents his or her contributions that can help the child next to them by giving them an education and effectively lifting them out of poverty. In addition, I included care.org’s branding on the top to remind viewers who the charity is, in a font as close as possible in my view called “Teko” from Google font.
