Icon Set Design Rationale:
The four icons I created were for the Contact, Events, Photo Gallery, and About/Info pages for the Stony Brook Computing Society’s website. I used an envelope as the icon for the Contact page because it is commonly associated with e-mail, even in the digital world. SBCS has an email and a mailing list for members to subscribe to a newsletter, which fits with the envelope theme. I created a calendar icon for the Events page because there will be events happening on different dates throughout the semesters. I created a simplified photo as the icon for the Photo Gallery page because this icon is often used throughout the Internet to indicate a collection of photos. Lastly, I used a text message bubble with an “i” inside to indicate an About/Information page. An “i” commonly appears on informational pages on websites, so it is easily recognizable to the audience. I also wanted to use a text message bubble to surround the “i”, rather than a plain circle, as an ode to the club’s core focus on technology and computer science.
All of these icons also have rounded edges and are contained in a circle to make the icons consistent with one another. Circular shapes evoke a sense of community and friendliness, which is important for a club that aims to attract more students to join and participate. Furthermore, I used the colors present in the logo and typography for the colored icons.
