Personas Section:
Persona #1
Persona Type and Job Title of Persona: Technical Hiring Manager
Average Base Pay: $145,000/yr.
Technical Comfort: Almost always the go-to person for technical questions on the team they manage. They know all the ins and outs of the data science field.
Experience and Age: Typically have at least 2-5 years of experience before so can be anywhere starting from 24 years old onwards (starting after 2 years minimum upon completion of bachelors).
Back Story:
- Usually have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
- May or may not have a masters degree in Data Science
- Have worked at the company for usually a couple years as a Data Scientist or Software Engineer before getting promoted
- Manages technical team that the applicant joins if given an offer
- May or may not be assessing your technical knowledge, if not then they will have a separate interview for you to meet the team and see if you are a good fit for them
Motivations:
- Applicant with good grasp of data structures and algorithms knowledge
- Applicant with good grasp of statistics and statistical analysis
- Applicant with certifications in Data Science
- Applicant who asks specific questions when confused
- Simplicity and efficiency
Frustrations:
- Applicant with lack of SQL and Python knowledge
- Applicant with lack of Open Source Framework knowledge
- Applicant lazy or scared to ask for help
- Overcomplexity
- Inability for applicant to problem solve on the fly
Their Ideal Candidate for the Job:
- Good coding skills and good data structures and algorithms knowledge
- Great statistics skills to apply to modeling
- Willing to be flexible and work on different teams
- Great communication and soft skills
Persona #2
Persona Type and Job Title of Persona: HR Recruiter
Average Base Pay for Role Applying: $45,984
Technical Comfort: Is part of the Human Resources department so does not have the direct technical knowledge that an engineer or hiring manager would.
Experience and Age: Usually no experience needed so can be anywhere from 22 years old onwards (starting after completion of bachelors).
Back Story:
- No specific major is common because there is no recruiting major so they usually come from any major with the most popular ones being marketing, psychology, business, and human resources
- The one that will be asking you the behavioral questions in the behavioral interview
- Will not be assessing your technical skills
- The one that may do your initial phone interview to learn more about the company and ask you some questions
Motivations:
- Applicant who is a kind person
- Applicant who shows interest in the company
- Good communication skills
- Diverse applicant
- Professional applicant
Frustrations:
- Rude applicant
- Lack of professionalism in applicant
- Applicant seems to not be motivated for the position or applying to just get a job
Their Ideal Candidate for the Job:
- Overall a person they would want to work with
- Great personality
- Seems like the applicant would be great on the team they are applying for
- Shows interest in company
Persona #3
Persona Type and Job Title of Persona: Data Scientist/Engineer
Average Base Pay: $113,309/yr.
Technical Comfort: Has a great amount of technical knowledge as has cleared this same technical interview not too long ago.
Age and Experience: Same job that applicant is applying for so technically no experience needed; thus, they can be anywhere from 22 years old onwards (starting after completion of bachelors).
Back Story:
- Usually majored in computer science or a related field
- Not uncommon to see a masters degree in data science or a related field
- Will be directly assessing your technical skills through either coding or data modeling problem
- Interviews you after initial screening with HR
- Willing to answer any questions about their process interviewing at the company not too long ago for the same role as applicant
- Usually applicant goes through rounds(usually 2-4) of these interviews back to back on a given day
Motivations:
- Applicant who can design and execute clean and efficient code
- Applicant who explains in detail their thought process for the problem
- Applicant with great data structures and algorithms knowledge
- Simplicity
Frustrations:
- Applicant who does not understand the coding problem even with hints
- Applicant who codes in complete silence
- Applicant who does not consider edge cases
- Applicant who lies on resume about their familiarity with certain languages
Their Ideal Candidate for the Job:
- A technically strong applicant
- Seem like a person they would want to work with
