Though typography is usually not the first thing on someone’s mind, but it a crucial part of the design process. The first step I took was making the logotype for the organization. I felt that it was important to create this first and allow the rest of the typography follow a similar style. For this logo type I to make it clear that this was a musical group because the name does not clearly state that. This is why I chose a music staff as the base for the lettering. I used two fonts for this, Lucida Sans and Lucida Calligraphy. I originally looked at using Lucida Bright which is a Serif font and not a Sans Serif like Lucida Sans; however, the cleaner and more simplistic font worked mush better with the lines of the music staff. A Sans Serif font can symbolize some thing modern/ high tech, which you usually don’t think of with a jazz ensemble, but Stony Brook Live is a more contemporary ensemble still preforming some classic jazz but also more modern pop and rock tunes. I added Lucida Calligraphy for “Live” to add some contrast to the rest of the text and also add some elegance and a personal touch. This font speaks towards the sophistication of the group as well as adding a personal touch since script fonts mimic handwriting. The last two items added were making “oo” in “Brook” two sixteenth notes as well as dotting the “i” with a fermata.
I also had to consider the typography to be used in a web page/app. I chose two fonts to be used, this includes the entire Lucida font family, which I used two of the fonts above, and Broadway as a decorative font. First I decided to choose the Lucida font family because of its versatility. This font family includes Serif, Sans Serif, and Script font types that work well together. Another reason why I chose this font family was because I used it in the logotype for the group which showed me how well the font canĀ be used to add visuals with music notes and other symbols. This font family is simple and easy to read while not being too square or modern. I also chose Broadway as a font to be used for headers, titles, and other forms of text that should be displayed. I specifically chose this decorative Sans Serif font because it has a look and feel to it that makes a person think about show business, Broadway, and since it was created in the 1920’s it has an older, classic feel to it. I felt that it was the best display font that resembles this group being a jazz ensemble.
