Job Title: Undergraduate Student Majoring in Asian and Asian American Studies
Backstory:
- Ethan is a freshman student at Stony Brook University, studying Asian and Asian American Studies. Ethan is a second-generation immigrant born to a Chinese family. His parents moved to the U.S. before he was born, and they continue to speak Cantonese at home, though Ethan understands some Cantonese but is not fluent and feels more comfortable speaking English.
- He had limited opportunities to learn deeply about Cantonese culture outside of his family growing up and feels disconnected from his cultural roots.
- Now as a first-year student at Stony Brook University, studying Asian and Asian American Studies, Ethan is trying hard to reconnect with his heritage and better understand Cantonese traditions, culture, language, and values.
Motivations:
- Ethan wants to understand more of Cantonese and Chinese culture, including traditions, culture, language, and values.
- Ethan wants to build up more connections to his Cantonese roots through the Cantonese Club while forming new friendships and being part of a supportive community on campus that helps more students with similar backgrounds and anyone who is interested in Cantonese culture.
- He is also motivated by the fun and educational events the club offers, like traditional food workshops, language workshops, and cultural celebrations.
- He wants to communicate better with his Cantonese-speaking grandparents, who do not speak English, and deepen his relationship with them.
Frustrations:
- Ethan finds it is not easy to find some Cantonese cultural events on campus that fit his schedule due to limited visibility and lack of centralized communication.
- Ethan sometimes feels that smaller clubs like the Cantonese Club don’t get as much attention compared to larger student organizations.
- He wishes there were more regular updates and easy access to event information online such as through a dedicated website or app not only through the Corq and SBU Engage.
Their Ideal Experience:
- Ethan wants a website or platform where he can easily use and find information and get regularly updated information, on upcoming events. Also, reminders for RSVP would definitely be helpful for joining the events.
- He also wants a platform or places where he could share his experiences and thoughts after the events to help the club and community grow.
- There would be a lot of opportunities to help participants really get into the sense of Cantonese culture, like celebrating the traditional festivals, cooking or trying traditional food, sharing and learning about the culture, and Cantonese language lessons.
- A friendly and supportive community within the club that helps members’ and participants’ personal connections and learning through different activities.
