Roller Coaster Design and Development

Synopsis:

A roller coaster is an amusement park attraction involving light railroad tracks with tight curves and steep slopes on which people ride in fast open cars. They are primarily made out of wood, steel, or a combination of the two. Major roller coaster manufactures include Intamin, Rocky Mountain Construction, and Bolliger and Mabillard. The design of a roller coaster involves more than just physics and engineering. Aspects such as stories and themes to match a park’s theme and taking into account one’s tolerance for thrill must also be considered. 

 

Objective:

To use video and animation to showcase the process of designing and building a fictional roller coaster. Videos of existing roller coasters, such as the popular Vekoma Boomerang model, will be used as examples of inspiration behind the design process. An animation will show the construction of a new roller coaster and the completed design. Music will dramatize the construction of the roller coaster, and audio will be used to represent the intensity of the roller coaster through screams.

 

Audience:

The intended audience is anyone with an interest in design, engineering, or roller coasters in general.
