Character Design

The character of my animation is a robot – he serves an an enemy in the game that the user is playing. While he is the antagonist, I didn’t want to make him unlikable, as he’s the focus of the short. Because of this,I tried to characterize him as more mischievous than malicious. I drew inspiration from more animated, 50/60’s toy robots, rather than “real” or futuristic robots. I gave him some pointed features, the eyes and hands; but rounded the rest of the design to make it less hostile and more playful.

I also created rough drafts of his facial expressions. Because he lacks a mouth, his expressions are conveyed through very animated eyes, robotic sounds, and hand/arm motion.
