Meeting Date: March 11, 2021

Meeting Time: 4:30 PM – 5:18 PM

Meeting Duration: 48 minutes

Place of Meeting: Zoom

Members in Attendance: Jahangir Riaz, Andrew Tam, Nusrat Ria, Dr. Carol Carter,                                                 Professor Anthony Scarlatos

Milestones Established

    • Held a meeting with Dr. Carter, who talked about how she would go to rehab centers like Seafield Center, have discussions with rehab patients about drug and alcohol addictions, read her books aloud, and even distribute some of her books to the patients. COVID-19 has hindered her ability to do this which is why she would like to put her book “Javier’s Sister: A Family’s Struggle with Drug Addiction” on the Sunshine Prevention Center website and have it accessible to more people during the pandemic.
    • Dr. Carter explained the message she wants to send through her book “Javier’s Sister: A Family’s Struggle with Drug Addiction”. She wants to relay the message:” We all have rainy days, but the sun will shine again.”
    • We discussed how we could upload the eBook onto the Sunshine Prevention Center website and also make it interactive for users.
      • Add background music to the eBook.
      • Dr. Carter can do voiceovers by reading out the dialog in the book, and we can add the audio to its respective page in the eBook.
      • Add visual effects and animations to specific aspects of the eBook to make it interactive and appealing to younger children.
      • Ask questions such as “What do you think about what you read?” or “How do you think this character should respond?” to the reader every couple of pages in order to make sure that the user is comprehending the material being presented.
    • Asked Dr. Carter about the demographic of this book.
      • As this book is a illustrated book with colorful images, it is mostly aimed at younger children (1st graders – 6th graders).
      • However, it is available for everyone as older readers such as teenagers and adults have found this book helpful. It helps them figure out how to approach the subject of drug addiction.
      • There isn’t one, singular socioeconomic group, gender, race, or ethic group that this book is aimed at. People of every type of social, cultural, financial, and age group is affected by drug addiction. Therefore, it is aimed at the general public.
    • Established that Dr. Carter will upload the PDF version of “Javier’s Sister: A Family’s Struggle with Drug Addiction”, the song titled “One Day the Sun Will Shine Again”, character pictures, and any other additional materials will be uploaded to the Google Drive Directory shared with her.

Mission Statement

Our mission as college students during this pandemic is to make resources readily available to several children and adults across societies facing mental health, family, and personal issues during a difficult time like this. We are working with Sunshine Prevention Center in efforts to increase interactive activities on their  website. We are currently working on transforming “Javier’s Sister: A Family’s Struggle with Drug Addiction”, written by Dr. Carol Carter, into an interactive eBook readily available to all along with animations, activities, and interactive design. In addition, if time permits, we would love to brainstorm a few ideas for other interactive activities for the center.
