Presentation – Ana Mendieta

Ana Mendieta born in 1948 was a Cuban-American artist who used various forms of art.  She used performance, sculpting, painting, and video within her work.  She was mostly known for her “earth-body” works.  In 1969 she received her BA in art and in 1972 she received her MA in painting.  Both degrees came from her attendance at the University of Iowa.  While achieving her MFA, which she received in 1978 at the University of Iowa as well, she discovered that she liked working with her body as well as things found in nature in her art.  It was during this time that she traveled to Mexico with her class and started her Silueta series, a series in which she was using her body, making impressions of her body or creating body like figures with outlines in the natural world around her.

I was drawn to her work especially the Silueta series due to the way she would compose her subject.  It is very distinct that what we are looking at is a body and in some cases her actual body.  The use of the natural materials she would find where she was “performing” this art adds an extra depth to leaving a part of herself behind in these places.  It is very similar to how the human race has left a mark on this earth.
