João Silva is a Portuguese-born South African photographer, mainly specializing in war photography and photojournalism. Silva was a member of the Bang Bang club, a collective of photographers who captured the events in South Africa from the release of Nelson Mandela to the country’s first elections in 1994. Since then he has traveled across the world documenting some of the world’s most dangerous events, putting his life on the line every time he does so. In 2010 while on patrol with U.S. soldiers in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Silva stepped on a land mine losing his left leg from below the knee and his right leg from just above the knee. He is currently a staff photographer for the New York Times in Africa.
