Hi, my name is Yichun Qiu.I come from Shanghai China and I have been in US for about 4 years. There are a lots of difference between China and US.
I have been live in California for about 3years. I did have an experience of culture shock in that time. At first, I studied in a language school and live with 2 roommates in one room. One of my roommate is an American, who is a very outgoing girl. Staying at room was my favourite choice at the weekends. However, my roommate always try to ask my out or attend party with her. She even have one serious conversation with me and pointed out that I should make more friends instead of lying on the bed and playing my cell phone.
Americans are always enthusiastic in any time compared with Chinese people. When I am on my way to school, some strangers hail me or nod to me. At the beginning, I thought it was so weird and I would just walk away, because in China, no one would pay attention to a strangers in the road. However, several weeks later, I was familiar with this and said “hello” back to them or gave them a smile. In my opinion, it is a positive change to me–trying to be nice with strangers, although Chinese will never nob to a strangers on the road. Maybe the reason is that there are two many people in China. If people nod to everyone they meet on their way, people would never get their destination.
Food is the other problem for me. I enjoy Chinese food and some fast food like McDonald’s and KFC. However, when I came to the US, I found that the food in KFC here is different with the one in China. Obviously, Chinese just change some formulation of the food. To be honest, I prefer Chinese food to American food. Chinese food have more styles and healthier, but unfortunately I am a terrible cook and the Chinese food restaurant is expensive. As a result, I always go to restaurant at weekends and have American food in the rest of days.
The primary education system in the US is more casual than Chinese primary education system, especially the education in high school. In China, people have to learn and study a lot in high school. We barely have time for entertainment. University Entrance Examination in China is much more strict than SAT. In addition, all the university have to enroll students based on the examination. However, most of the American universities have their own standard and SAT just one of them. Americans students have to apply for university individually. Instead of it, students apply them together only with the score of University Entrance Examination.
The college education opposite between this two countries. Students can always get graduation without working hard in China, while American students have to focus on study and learn as much as they can to get a bachelor‘s degree.
