According to the survey we have done, Westerners actually prefer authentic Chinese food over American Chinese food. Most of them just haven’t had the chance to try real Chinese food . Therefore, they are not aware of how different American style and real Chinese food are from each other. We believe that food is a cultural ambassador. America is characterized by diversity, with diverse people from diverse backgrounds, and with diverse cultures and habits. However, one similarity shared by all of us is that we are all human, and therefore, all enjoy good food. Chinese food is also characterized by one’s social interpersonal relationships with others. Unlike in America, where it is regarded impolite to talk over a meal, in China, it is the basics to chat while sharing food with family and friends. Therefore, Chinese food can act as the factor that may increase the interest, of Westerners, in the culture of the country half a world away, while allowing them to have a taste of the food.

We interviewed a total of 12 people. 8 of them Westerners, and 4 of them Chinese students in Stony Brook. Among the 8 Westerners, 6 of them know the differences between American Chinese food and authentic Chinese food and all of the 6 prefer authentic over American style. Our survey only included around 10 people, however, so our conclusion may not be able to cover all in a general sense. According to our interviews, we could say that, Westerners may actually prefer authentic Chinese food over the American variation created to suit the taste of Americans.
