WEEK 1: Hello Everyone :)

Hi Everyone,

My name is Allison Bressmer and I am part of the Writing Certificate program; this is my final course!

I’ve been a teacher/professor for 26 years.  Since 2001, I’ve taught in the Department of Critical Reading and Academic Advancement at Nassau Community College and I truly love my job and my profession overall.  My favorite class to teach is composition–I teach both developmental  and credit-bearing composition courses–it presents with so much opportunity for creative teaching, and I am able to update my methodologies, readings, and writing prompts every semester.  I never get bored.  What’s even more gratifying, though, is seeing my students progress along with the semester.

I’m slightly (just slightly) trepidatious, but even more excited to take a deep dive into digital rhetorics.  I’m no luddite, but while I can navigate myself through digital experiences and platforms pretty well, I think I’m too content to stay in the shallow end and am ready to enter deeper waters.

If I’m not at work, I’m likely exercising in some way; I need to move.  After that, you can probably find me at the library, reading in bed, or working on a jigsaw puzzle (therapy!) with a mindless TV show on low volume. If it’s a Friday, I don’t mind Happy Hour with friends! If I’m cooking, cleaning, or driving, I’ve got a podcast playing–podcasts have taken those chores and made them so much more enjoyable.

I look forward to working with you all this semester.  Good luck!

  1. Great to meet you, Allison! I’m looking forward to working with you and having you share your extraordinary experience in teaching and pedagogy in the course. I’m pretty sure that you’ll find exciting connections between the ideas and materials here and your teaching, as I know I have. Nothing to fear here–think of this course as a buffet introduction to some major areas of digital rhetoric. There is plenty of space for you to find your niche and go deep in what interests you.

It’s Friday as I write this, so enjoy Happy Hour (whether with friends or just relaxing alone).
