Overview

The goal of this project was to design a 3-D printed model that could replace the liver in terms of function and compatibility. Taking into account the complexity of the organ in each individual person, we proposed a 3-D printed scaffold that would instead facilitate cell growth and therefore liver regeneration to ensure each person had a liver compatible with their body.

This design had to meet a number of design criteria; the most important ones being:

  1. Biocompatibility
  2. Preservation of liver function
  3. Model manufacturing time.

By electrospinning, the scaffold would be created using collagen and various proteins that promote cell growth in the liver. To reinforce the model even further, bioprinting would be used to make sure the scaffold would be used in the most efficient way once implanted into the body.
