ARS281-Task 1-Bruce Gilden

Bruce Gilden is one of the most famous street photographer in the world.

This member of Magunm photos agency is more like a thug from Magunm Research. He works like a boxer instead of photographer. He wipes his lenses by drool over it, he talk dirty to people who refuse his flash, he invade those people. And these makes him great.

Bruce started his career back in 1968, but using flash until 1980. He claimed, befor he uses flash, he took 600 rolls of photos and realize they are all “shit”. He figured out he needs to seperate his target with the background. He likes shadow, and those theatrical effect flash can bring to the photo.

The photographic style of Bruce Gilden is defined by the  dynamic accent of his pictures, his special graphic qualities, and his original and direct manner of shooting the faces of passers-by with a flash. Gilden’s powerful images in black and white and now in color have brought the Magnum photographer worldwide fame.

The lense he often uses is a 28mm wide-angle lenses. He usually shot people in a very close distance with a low perspective, not the usual perspective we see someone. The flash freeze those people in a dramatic way like they were on a stage.
