Your Project 3 series is reminiscent of how Hilla and Bernd Becher would catalog buildings and structures in a scientific, taxonomic way. I would never have realized the individuality of each 7-Eleven if you hadn’t confronted the viewer with them. It’s almost like a spot the difference game that makes the viewer want to look back and forth between the images and compare them with each other.
A lot of your work exemplifies a successful application of the “rule of thirds”. I especially enjoyed the Message project, where the neon jacket of the police officer coincidentally matched the color of the “I love NY” sign, which caught my attention. It’s interesting that my immediate mental image of NYC is congested due to cars and people, but when I look at your photo, the feeling of congestion comes from the number of signs and how closed off the buildings feel.
Regarding technique, I absolutely adore the composition and sharpness of your work. Based on the 7/11 series, you clearly have a handle of manipulating manual settings to capture crisp photos at nighttime which is something I still struggle with (mine oftentimes turn out grainy from high ISO). I was curious if you used a tripod or anything, since I imagine that would require a low shutter speed.
Thanks for your response! Btw, I didn’t use a tripod. 1/80s isn’t very low, once the shutter speed reaches 1/20 you may need a tripod.
