I’m sure some of you are familiar with the abandoned plane factory that sits idle on a trail going from Port Jeff Station to East Setauket. The Lawrence Aviation factory shut down in 2003 and has been deteriorating ever since. Just last year the owners had to pay 48.1 billion dollars to clean up the hazardous material. The factory has been contaminating our drinking water for years before it shut down. The fifth image is just an idea of what’s running off into our bay and into the soil. The structure itself is huge and empty. The walls are peeling and the ceiling could collapse at any moment from the rust and accumulated water. The walls are filled with layers of graffiti from various artists throughout the years. People from all political ideologies have visited this place. In the first image is a quote from the Unabomber’s manifesto, But I also saw many swasticas and other nazi symbols. During my few visits I encountered a few other young people climbing the high rise ladder in the hanger depicted in the last photo. With this series of photos, I wanted to depict the sheer scale and emptiness of the abandoned building. It’s an ugly reminder of “the consequences of the industrial revolution”. This place now serves as a local art museum of sorts. Many of the graffiti pieces are stunning works of spray paint art. The seclusion of the area allows artists to take their time and create true works of art. Although the building its self and its previous purpose were something to be ashamed of because of its environmental harm the new life that has been given to it by artists in our community makes the concrete and steel walls a little less heavy.

  1. these are awesome! i love that you provided a description. i want to check this place out i’ve never heard of it. i’m glad you captured the picture of the puddle of contaminants and brought some awareness to this issue because i myself had no idea.

  2. I really enjoyed looking at your photographs. I didn’t know anything about the abandoned plane factory so it was interesting to read about it while I looked through the photos. A lot of students gravitated toward landscape photographs, myself included, so it was interesting to see a different take on the project and also learn about the structure.
