Brian Donnelly, more commonly known as “KAWS,” is a prolific modern day artist from Jersey City, New Jersey. In his adolescence, Donnelly frequented graffiti and skateboarding as a means to escape his environment, however as he grew older he began pushing the boundaries of what we typically consider to be paintings and sculptures. KAWS is notorious for his animated art style that utilizes bright colors as well as his iconic “Companion” character that takes inspiration from Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse. Since his pieces began getting traction in the mid 90’s, KAWS has only become more famous for his work, boasting collaborations with Jordan Brand, Kanye West, and even receiving his own float in the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
“I think they didn’t understand that it’s not like I make these toys for the money. The toys are actually part of the work.”
Donnelly’s work has expanded far beyond the United States with the Companion character becoming the staple of his work. Since 2018, KAWS has put forward many unique exhibits including his “KAWS HOLIDAY 2019” attraction in which he toured through Hong Kong with a 28 meter inflatable Companion which can be viewed here.
