Rhinos have been hunted and have had their homes decimated time and time again, and even still they have come back from the brink of extinction. Although poaching and black market trafficking has had the most impact on their population, the second biggest problem is habitat loss and fragmentation.
Twenty years ago, the black rhino population hit an historic low of less than 2,500 individuals. Due to persistent conservation efforts, black rhino numbers have escalated to approximately 5,600. They still remain a critically endangered species, and a lot of work is still needed to keep these numbers from collapsing again.
