Betina du Toit is a South African photographer living in Paris, France.

Betina began her career as a journalist. After working for several major publications, she turned back to the camera – a medium which she has always been drawn to and which now takes up her full attention in her adopted home in Paris.

Du Toit is enchanted by nature, preferring to shoot her subjects in poetic locations like the Bois de Boulogne, a pristine lake in the west of Paris; the rocky terrain of Cape Town in South Africa; or floating about in the Dead Sea. Wherever the location, what remains constant in Du Toit’s work is a dreamy aesthetic and strong connection with her subjects.

Betina draws out a natural and effortless beauty in each of her subjects, tying them to their surroundings.

No matter what the project, however, she considers her practice an “endless attempt to re-capture the fleeting moment when all elements come together”, driven by the need “to capture a feeling. The magic moment. It’s addictive,” she tells It’s Nice That.

Always working in an intuitive and intimate way, Betina’s process is instrumental in building what has become her signature aesthetic. She responds to her subjects and their environments, resulting in “unaffected” imagery, “stripped back from the non-essential”.

Her work is delicate and soft, with simple compositions and vibrant colors. The majority of the work is aimed at young girls. There’s something retro and romantic about it, whether it’s a group photo or an individual photo. One yearns for nature’s peace and harmony. It’s a warm visual experience, almost as if you’re in a dream.
