Artist’s Statement:

For this theme of environmental justice, my idea is to combine Central Park and the
landfill because this is the center of Manhattan and also the most unlikely location for a
landfill. I hope this poster can remind those who ignore the environmental pollution they
cause to others. What if environmental hazards were all around you, affecting your life
and health? Would people still be generating unnecessary garbage at will?

I have tried many ways to combine the landfill and the central park, trying to make a
strong contrast. The final choice was to fill the lake in the park with trash. From the
bird’s view it is clear to see that this is New York City, and the neat vertical lines create
a sense of beauty. I can only choose to express it in short words because the
background is too complicated. White and simple font is the best choice. When factory
exhaust fumes will end up in the air people breathe. When wastewater containing
harmful substances affects people’s drinking water. When landfills produce odors that
are simply impossible to ignore when they are right around people’s homes. Before
creating unnecessary garbage, I hope people who live in the city can think about where
all the garbage goes. Don’t waste it freely just because it doesn’t affect you.
