Lab Notebook Instructions

  1. Lab notebooks must remain in designated location. Lab notebooks may not be taken home for any reason.
  2. Lab notebook entries must be written in pen.
  3. All entries must be clearly dated.
  4. No pages are to be removed from the notebook.
  5. Errors made in the notebook may be edited using one thin strikethrough. Do not completely scratch out or cover any entries. Initial and date edits made.
  6. Each entry should end with a signature from the researcher.
  7. Entries should be made to lab notebooks following any interactions with animals or animal samples (i.e. tissue samples). Entries can include:
    1. Name or code of animal/sample
    2. Origin of sample (who collected it)
    3. Purpose/details of interaction. You may refer to established protocols.
    4. Problems that may arise and steps taken to correct problems.
    5. All data with units.
    6. Qualitative notes – including strange or unusual events, concerns, questions.
    7. Graphs, charts, images, etc may be taped into the notebook. Please tape all sides down completely and initial and date the overlap between the tape and the notebook page.
    8. Lab notebooks will be evaluated periodically. Look for notes/comments from the principal investigator.
