Lab Notebooks
> Lab Notebook Instructions
- Lab notebooks must remain in designated location. Lab notebooks may not be taken home for any reason.
- Lab notebook entries must be written in pen.
- All entries must be clearly dated.
- No pages are to be removed from the notebook.
- Errors made in the notebook may be edited using one thin strikethrough. Do not completely scratch out or cover any entries. Initial and date edits made.
- Each entry should end with a signature from the researcher.
- Entries should be made to lab notebooks following any interactions with animals or animal samples (i.e. tissue samples). Entries can include:
- Name or code of animal/sample
- Origin of sample (who collected it)
- Purpose/details of interaction. You may refer to established protocols.
- Problems that may arise and steps taken to correct problems.
- All data with units.
- Qualitative notes – including strange or unusual events, concerns, questions.
- Graphs, charts, images, etc may be taped into the notebook. Please tape all sides down completely and initial and date the overlap between the tape and the notebook page.
- Lab notebooks will be evaluated periodically. Look for notes/comments from the principal investigator.
