• Internship at the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery): I had the pleasure of shadowing under a local dentist, Dr. Chou, where I assisted and observed him and several other doctors perform various surgeries on patients. Procedures include dental implants, braces bonding, and crown placements. I also managed patient documents such as health insurance, contracts, photos, etc. Patient service/communication was also very important as patients would consist of people from all kinds of background and attitude.

 

  • Business Internship at Maple Fashion: I was able to learn many financial concepts as well as advertisement methods for garment sales. Social skills including price negotiations and customer service were developed to be able to deal with customer of different caliber. I also organized, cataloged, and updated stocks to ensure adequate daily product quantities. I participated in various customer consultations and promotional tactics in special events, which further helped me build a more professional manner of communication. Financial methods for efficient calculations and record tracking were taught to me, which I found very useful in other fields where organization mattered.

 

  • Smile Today Orthodontics: I was able to assist under an Orthodontist, where I learned the most about the genre of my interest. Orthodontics had always been my dream career and being able to be involved in all the processes involved in this field was eye-opening. I had the most hands-on experience in this job including taking panoramic/cephalometric dental x-rays, 3D scanning, prescribing and making aligners/retainers, tying elastics/o-ties, and managing patient insurances. I also assisted the doctor with more complicated procedures such as bonding, braces/expander/headgear adjustments, and dental evaluations. These opportunities allowed me to develop technical skills required in the field, as well as a more in-depth knowledge of the field. Consultations with patients exposed me to many cases with varying degree of dental severity/difficulties. Seeing how my orthodontic approached each case allowed me to gain a better insight of the flexible ways orthodontics can help with the patients.
