Writing Center Tutor, Program in Writing and Rhetoric. Stony Brook, NY, August 2015 – present

  • Group of teenagers working with teacher in school classTutoring Methodology: Working as a Writing Center Tutor has allowed me to not only develop my writing but also take a fresh approach to writing—teaching it. Our primary goal is to improve students’ writing skills and we do so by focusing on the macro issues of a paper—content, organization, and clarity.
  • Embracing Diversity: From my student appointments at the center, I learned to work with students of various majors and vastly different backgrounds: from native speakers to ELL students, and from freshmen taking writing workshop to graduate students applying for a postdoc position. However, as a writing center tutor, I work to assess each student to find the best approach to maximize the productivity of the session and to engage the student as much as possible.

  • People Interaction: This position has allowed me to further develop my tutoring methodology, as with being a writing center tutor; both positions have played a big role in fostering my passion for teaching and interacting with people.

Hospital Volunteer, Department of Emergency Medicine, Stony Brook Hospital, Stony Brook, NY, September 2014 – May 2015

  • Fast-paced Environment: Volunteering at the Emergency Department at Stony Brook Hospital provided me with a valuable experience that supplements my experience at Bellevue Hospital Center; the environment was more fast-paced and patients come and go.
  • Patient Advocacy: I was able to interact with many patients here by providing emotional support or offering basic amenities to patients. I acted as a point of contact for patients’ families, and it is fulfilling to be able to provide guidance to worried family members of inpatients.
  • Physician Shadowing: I was also offered the wonderful experience of shadowing a resident physician where I got to observe doctor-patient interactions and a stitching procedure.
