Project 03 : Sleep – Brain Zzzz’s
My topic for the sleep project is sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is one of the sleep disorders in which the brainstem awakes during sleep, mostly in the REM phase, due to an unknown cause which results in our consciousness being awake while the body is still in sleep. Sleep paralysis may last for a few seconds or a few minutes, and it can happen repeatedly at once. Every people experience different things while they go through sleep paralysis, some might experience mild symptoms, while some others experience severe nightmares. I personally experience sleep paralysis quite often, about once every few weeks or so. This black and white illustration above depicts all kinds of visual hallucinations that I have experienced so far. Also, I added auditory hallucination (crowd screaming) which is what I experience every single time when I have sleep paralysis. Most of the time, I only experience audio hallucination, but when I feel a bit more tired than usual, I see visual hallucinations which are mostly dark configurations that appears with random shapes and movements. Sometimes, they appear with more accurate shapes with details like an eye and mouth from the illustration. I used Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom tablet to make this piece. The audio source is from Freesound.org and made by ‘DigestContent’
