PechaKucha: Janine Antoni
Janine Antoni is a Bahamian-born American artist. She is mostly known for performance art, sculpture, and installation. She’s also known for her quirky process and the use of her body as a tool in her art. Many of her works have to do with her body, womanhood, and motherhood. In my presentation I included works I found interesting. The main focus for this presentation in regards to the class is her piece called Slumber. In this piece, Antoni would sleep in the gallery with a polysomnogram machine. Also in this galley, a loom is set up. During the day, the artist would weave the results of her REM from shreds of her nightgown. This loom would create a blanket that was used by the artist while sleeping. Rapid Eye Movement, or REM is a stage of sleep in which dreams occur.
To continue research on this topic I found an article from Scientific American called “The Science Behind Dreaming”. This article discusses studies that focused on remembering dreams and the possible purpose of dreams. The findings explain that dreams, although not real, produce emotions that are. When we remember our dreams, those memories help us process emotions.
