Analog Memories, 2023

Analog Memories, 2023 is a collection of film negatives taken from my family’s archive. They were scanned and edited digitally, revealing the fuzziness that can come from childhood memories. It also explores the idea that childhood “memories” might just be knowledge and remembrance of the documentation.

For this project, I went through a family archive of photos. I found a pile of film negatives that came from disposable camera used to capture my childhood and my family’s life. I decided to scan them into the computer and edit them to be able to see the images. Through this process, some images are left visible with some being completely unrecognizable. With time, our early memories can be forgotten. Many of us forget memories from our childhood, but “Some early memories are more likely than others to survive childhood amnesia, says Carole Peterson at Memorial University of Newfoundland. One example, she says, is a memory that carries a lot of emotion.“I wanted to touch on the idea of childhood amnesia and how images can help us remember and keep the memories from our youth as we grow.

Another aspect of this project is that personally, I do not remember the memories from the days in some of these pictures. My memory is that of the image and its existence. Through verbal tales of the events from those day and the images themselves, we can find ourselves “remembering” these times.
