My project is inspired by the act of implanting false memories in people. This is a technique used in cognitive psychology that’s meant to investigate human memory. In my project, I will be taking portrait photographs of 2 to 3 people, that I know very well, while asking them a range of 4 questions. I will be capturing their facial expressions and body language in the photos.
The questions will range from simple to complex and will be based on my personal experiences with the people chosen. Also, the questions will start out as simple and completely true, then less simple and mostly true, then complex and mostly false, and finally very complex and completely false. For example, the first question would be “Do you remember when we went to the mall in August?” The second would be, “Do you remember when we talked to the two guys at the mall and one of their names was Maleek and he was tall?” The third would be, ” Do you remember drinking the large and really expensive frappe that you ordered at Starbucks in the mall while we were talking to the guys, and some of it fell on your shirt? Lastly, the fourth would be, ” Do you remember when one of the guys in Macys told his friend that he was interested in you and his friend proceeded to ask you for your number discreetly because he was jealous and his friend noticed and they got into a huge argument after which they both stormed out?” I will photograph the person’s face after asking each of these questions.
After taking these photographs, I will post them on my blog and based how the questions are answered, ranging from remember, to somewhat remember, and can’t remember at all, I will alter their pictures using color glazes and photo effects. These alterations include color glazes such as black, white, and red, and effects such as blur and clarity. In addition, the color glazes will be based on the subject’s favorite color, giving each subject’s pictures clear distinction from the others.
Lastly, for each person, the photographs will be posted in the order of the questions that were asked. This will show the order of the complete range of each person’s facial expressions, emotions, and color and effect changes. Also, the title for each person’s photographs will be based on the subject of the questions asked, such as a beach, or a donut store.
