The book I read entitled The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, which was written by Oliver Sacks, was a very fascinating read for me. My favorite part of the book was the last case in which Oliver Sacks asked a man named Jose to draw a picture of his pocket watch for him. Everyone labeled Jose as retarded because they couldn’t understand why his reactions and behavior were so different from everyone else. However, in reality, Jose was autistic and had a great skill for drawing. For Jose, drawing was a way to connect to the outside world because he was closed off and didn’t really talk to people.
My project is about Alzheimer’s disease, which is a brain disfunction that affects a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. I will be taking a series of photographs inspired by the 7 degenerative stages of Alzheimer’s. In the photos, there will be one person doing different activities such as reading a book, sitting on a block, and lying down on the grass while looking at the sky. The focus of the photographs will be on one of the most drastic results of Alzheimer’s disease, which is personality change. For each photo, the person’s facial expressions and body language will change from calm and happy to eventually being confused and overwhelmed. There will also be edits made in the photos such as black and white filters and changing the lighting and contrast as the photos progress.
I have never done that, or else my wife would have though I was a scarf! lol
