Sleep Project

The City that Never Sleeps

For my project, I took pictures of different parts of Manhattan during very busy times. Specifically, in the afternoon at 12 pm, then at 3 pm, then at 5 pm, and lastly in the evening at 7 pm. For each photo, the main focus was the amount of light being produced, by either the sun or artificial lighting, as well as the amount of activity happening in the streets, in the form of people walking and vehicle traffic. In addition, while editing these photos, I increased the brightness, vibrance, as well as the saturation to further enhance the colorful and eye catching nature of the city. I left the noise in the photo taken at 7 pm to further emphasize the loud, fluorescent, commercial, and busy nature of the city at night, creating an almost unreal experience. I also added a video that helps capture the experience of being in the city. Through these pictures, and video, I wanted to show the amount of light and activity that people are constantly being exposed to in the city, and portray the famous New York saying, “The City that Never Sleeps”, in a literal sense.
