Artistic Statement

A sense is a physiological capacity of organisms that provides data for perception. Sensory Transportation is manipulation of these perception tools to assume an artificial environment –an environment in which we can reflect or lose ourselves in, a seemingly endless sea of audiovisual currents

When working in multimedia one often struggles with the ideal mode of communication and expression. Borrowing marketing and design concepts, an idea must manipulate multiple facets of an individual. Aesthetics cater to sight, and audio design guides hearing. In an exploration of the metaphysical, the piece affects the senses.

We are always growing. We experience the world around us, leave our mark and move on to the next. We are so busy growing often times we forget to reflect. As technology advances so does our dependence and subsequently constant involvement. Perhaps we can use that technology to stop and think. By thinking about our lives, assuming a third-person point of view and critiquing we can learn to live better, be happier, and love unconditionally. Synchronize yourself with the pulse of humanity; embark consciously on the linear journey that is time.

Pre-construction

Overview

The piece will be a 10-minute experimental video with accompanying audio. The video will mold itself to the created audio. I have always been a very big fan of EDM music and really enjoyed the visuals that accompany the audio in live performances. I am trying to further enhance the listening experience. I am enrolled in a video class, have a lot of animation experience, and am enrolled in a sound design class. I aim to combine all of these skills to create a very refreshing experimental piece.

Sound environments have the power to move people, when accompanied with visuals they can transport the viewer to a new world. Audio can tap into memory.  The listener is disconnected from the natural world and further immersed into the digital audio/visual.

Status

My sound design class just finished covering Logic Pro X and I can now start designing the audio. Video for the piece is currently being gathered. I did not want gross weather footage in my project so most of the shooting will be done now because of the improving weather. The next step is to animate the audio using aftereffects and an analog technique.

VIDEO

This video shows the animation and abstract composition I am looking for.

This video shows a second approach to the project using analog. Ultimately this is how the animation will be structured.

I will be using DATAMOSH techniques for the more intense sections of the audio.

AUDIO

I did quite a bit of searching and found a stock audio website that I can use freely to create the sound environment.

This link shows the projection material I will be using. The material can be projected on from behind.

POST

Finally, the project will be posted on my current portfolio asafharari.weebly.com in the video/animation section.

INTRODUCTION TO YOUR WORK:

Describe your work and conceptual concerns in general. (500 word Artist Statement)

The video elements of my piece will utilize projection-mapping methods to invade the peripheral of the listener. In doing so the listener is disconnected from the natural world and further immersed into the digital audio/visual. There are some conceptual concerns. The music cannot be too overwhelming; It will have to take the viewer on a visual and audio journey without exhausting the viewer. This will be one of the many considerations when I create the audio from scratch using newly recorded and prerecorded audio.

SYNOPSIS OF PROPOSED WORK / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

(250 word description of the project you are proposing)

Describe the theme and subject of your proposed project in-depth. Describe what your project will be about and give some insight into the context and background for your proposal. Try to describe your conceptual concerns, as well as your production aims for this project in specific (practical).

Proposed projects can be in any format that satisfies the Body of Work description outlined in the syllabus. Projects can be a series of photographs, a suite of paintings, an artist book, etc. You may also propose a written research project, a film, or a performance. Projects can be experimental and process driven as long as appropriate documentation is produced. It is encouraged that projects are developed from your existing practice in the art department so far.

The theme of the project is sensory transportation. Using two of the bodies most powerful communication senses (sight and hearing) I will transport the viewer into a meditative and in times exciting environment. Recently, visual technological advancement is taking a turn into the virtual reality realm. The virtual headsets in development seem to be stuck in the prototype stage. They only seem to attempt to replicate the real world. My project is aiming to completely eliminate the sensations we feel on a normal basis and take the viewer to an exaggerated visual state. The 10-minute video will be a composite of randomized animation, special simulation, recorded DSLR footage, and pre-recorded licensed video. It will be highly planned in association to the accompanying audio. I will make the audio. Using MIDI I will create a piece that takes the listener on an audio journey that sends them to varying sound environments. Projected on a science-fair like structure and using projection-mapping programs, I will have the video bleed from a central point to two receding axis. This will enable it to invade the peripheral of the viewer. They viewer will have the option to put on a headset and start the animation when ready to go on the visual and audio journey.

RESEARCH OUTCOMES / ARTWORKS:

What are the practical outcomes; produced artifacts? (bullet points, or listed items) Describe what exactly you will produce; what are the physical outcomes to your work? Be concrete and factual about what will be produced. How many objects, images? How big? Where?

  • Viewer will undergo an enhanced audio-visual experience
  • Exploration of the peripheral
  • Take the viewer on a sensory journey
  • Explore how the body reacts when receiving mixed information (the feet will be grounded) but other senses will be sending movement.
  • Explore the emotional shifts of the listener as the piece progresses

The final outcome will be an experimental installation piece that any passerby can experience.

PRODUCTION METHODS, MATERIALS, PROCESSES:

Identify and describe production methods, media, materials and the process involved in making your project. Include plans for presentation and display of finished work. Specify production needs, such as equipment and technical jobs for example printing, machine shop use, loaning of equipment, etc.

(bullet points, or listed items)

Production method:

  • Audio construction using Logic Pro X and MIDI
  • Incorporate heavy panning in the audio
  • Create the physical object to be projected on using thin fabric in a trifold manner.
  • Plan where the viewer will be standing and projector location
  • Rent out Camera, Green screen room.
  • Create the video after understanding the projection-mapping physics to utilize all three folds of the fabric.
  • Introduce sliding elements to the piece.
  • Install piece, specify where the viewer will stand
  • Create an on switch

TIME SCHEDULE:

Include a comprehensive calendar with production goals and technical requirements with benchmarks.

(bullet points, or listed items)

Need project due date to schedule (will be added in further drafts)

REFERENCES:

Identify and list the relevant study references for your research: artists, artworks, exhibitions; art historical precedence and contemporary works; books, essays and publications.

My direction recently took a drastic turn. More research will be provided in later drafts.
