The class went to the Simon’s Center to meet with Lorraine Walsh for her talk. In her talk, she discussed many topics such as the application of artificial intelligence into art, which was then continued in her work. Her work consists of flowers, which are photographs or prints of actual flowers that were then run through artificial intelligence. The results of the process would be an animation of flowers transitioning from other flowers, which would also show some new prints of plants that don’t currently exist unless you cross-breed plants. She also talked about her work curating the Simon’s center gallery and how she is essentially trying to highlight those doing interdisciplinary work, and talks about her impact on trying to empower people to do interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary work.
Along with this talk, Dr. Yager showed to also showed the works in the gallery. When we got to the gallery, it was quite interesting to see all of the process and the photographs taken on the six-month expedition. There was a monitor that contained a time lapse of glaciers melting and the matching of current photographs from a helicopter to previous pictures of the mountain and the glaciers from a museum. There was also a lot of information to explain the work and the purpose, which was very informative, especially if the audience didn’t get to interact with the Along with the pictures of the expedition, some photographs were the work of art of our very own professor Patricia Maurides. It was quite amazing the different types of photographic techniques that she used, along with the different experimental topics that were present in her work.
Some of the pictures from the field trip are shown below:
