For my presentation I have chosen Youssef Nabil an Egyptian artist and photographer, he shoots intricately arranged black-and-white photographs, primarily portraits, which he then precisely colors it in with a rich and varied palette, using a technique based on the color-tinting of old Egyptian portrait studios. “The technique I got from Egypt, but the colors I got from personal experience,” as said by him. Youssef began his profession by staging and photographing tableaux in which his friends acted out scenes that recall film stills from Egypt’s cinematic golden age, and the images he puts out today continue to give a sense of nostalgia for the cinematic past. What I like most about his work is he combines photography and painting. To give an example you can see the photo titled “Youssra & Sea, Sinai, 1996” he asked the person in the photo beforehand to remove her make up and he took photos of her and then later made them the way he wanted by coloring it in and it came out amazing. He translates his thought and ideas in to his photos. further more he says that he feels like he’s on a mission to show his emotions and feelings by combining photography and painting.

Youssef Nabil’s works combine the essence of photography and painting, which I think is very beautiful. Photography makes the portrait into exquisite scenery, while the color filling of painting enriches the rich color, which makes me never forget it.
